After half a century without winning the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs manage to end that streak. At the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco Forty-niners 31 to 20. This win against the 49ers makes the Chiefs the first team in NFL history to win three games after trailing by 10 or more points in a single postseason. Patrick Mahomes, who was the league’s MVP last year is now the Super Bowl MVP and is the third African-American quarterback to win a Super Bowl, making history on Sunday. Additionally, he is only 24, which makes him the third quarterback in NFL history to win the Lombardi Trophy before their 25th birthday. After his outstanding game Mahomes said, “We kept believing. That’s what we did all postseason. I felt like if we were down by 10, we weren’t playing our best football. The guys really stepped up. They believed in me. I was making a lot of mistakes out there early. We found a way to win it in the end.”

The Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, after 21 years, finally won the Super Bowl. He is known as “the best head coach to have never won a Super Bowl or NFL championship”. “I’m really excited. You get one, you want to go get another one, but we got to backpedal for about a minute here and enjoy this one and we’ll get busy on the next one,” Reid said after the game. Reid Broke the record for the most wins including playoffs with 222 career wins.

However, the game was a tough one given all the pressure put on Mahomes. He was sacked four times by the 49ers defense. He even spoke about the 49ers defense, saying, “They’re one of the best defenses that I’ve been up against in my career so far.” Mahomes made 26 of 42 passes for a total of 286 yards for the night. In the last quarter is when Mahomes turned it on with three straight touchdown drives in only five minutes.

As for the 49ers, it was a “tough loss”. The 49ers ended their season with a 4-12 record, putting them at the third team to go to the Super Bowl after winning at most four games. Jimmy Garoppolo, their quarterback, tore his ACL in the third game of the year putting the 49ers at a disadvantage for most of their season. Kyle Shanahan had his first Super Bowl appearance as the head coach. He said, “It was a tough loss, and it hurts everybody in that (locker) room losing the Super Bowl. We had opportunities to win that and came up short. Win or lose, it doesn’t change how I feel about our team. I’m proud of all of the guys for what they did all year, and I’m proud of what they did today.” Garoppolo was disappointed as well with the result saying, “I mean, I’ve never had this feeling before, so kind of an unreal feeling.” He previously won two Super Bowls when he was Brady’s backup QB for the Patriots. After 50 years and a great game, the Chiefs ended up on top with the Super Bowl LIV title.
