This years Spartan Varsity Volleyball season has been a long string of ups and downs. They started out the season with a sweeping win against Olympic, but quickly reached a downfall at their first away game. Since then it has been a steady decline of losses, but that doesn’t mean they went down without a fight. The most recent varsity volleyball game was at Seattle Prep where they fought to win one game of four. Two of the three that were lost were within five points of each other, and ended in heated rallies as well.

Head coach Dominique Atherly, known for her fiery spirit and pressure on the sidelines, still has a positive attitude towards the season. She believes that the team continues to improve and will do well in their upcoming game against Lakeside at home. Their last game against Lakeside had a hard loss of 3-0. Therefore, this week the team is really focusing on defense and serve receive. In their latest practice they exercised many passing skills and honed in on their back row attack defense and receive.

Besides the varsity team, Spartan Volleyball JV and C team are performing quite well in games. JV, coached by Lara Sweeney, has won 6 of their 11 games this season. They have continuously showed their effort to win with their scrappy plays and powerful offense, while C team (coached by Jen Roman), have won 8 of their 10 games so far. Their success comes in many forms with two strong freshman middle hitters and an advanced libero for their defense.

Overall the volleyball program is only looking to grow and become stronger. Many underclassmen are ready for the spots that will be opening up on varsity this coming year. Some of these girls include powerful outsides Skyla and Mazzy, along with middle Scarlett and setter Cara (all sophomores). These girls have promising spots, with sadly four seniors leaving the ranks; captains Paige Bouma and Julia Jakubik, Isabella Brown, and Mariko Ronan. So remember to come support your senior volleyball girls at their final home game for senior night, October 29th!
