Just after nine o’clock on Friday the 13th, a man opened fire in Westlake Station, killing one and injuring two others.

The accused suspect is Bryce Hardy, a 20 year old man who has a record of other criminal activities including burglary. He is being charged with murder, assualt, and illegal possession of a gun.

There were multiple witnesses, including a thirteen year old girl, who helped track down Hardy with photographs and a surveillance video. The suspect was arrested the following Monday morning in Bellevue and is being held at King County Jail on bail of two million dollars.

It is believed that Hardy had known two of the victims prior to the attack. The men were in a heated argument on Third and Pine Street. The fight moved down into the light rail station where Hardy became violent and fired shots. Dawda Corr was a 21 year old victim who died from multiple gunshot wounds. The other two surviving victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The area of Seattle where the shooting occurred has been known for dangerous criminal activities in the past. Tammy Stephen, who was reporting about the event with KOMO News explained, “This is where everyone comes to buy their drugs… something needs to be done. It’s crazy down here.”

In response to this event, there has been an increase in security around Westlake station and other high crime areas. John Gallagher works for Sound Transit and reported, “People will see more security officers on the platforms, people will be patrolling the tunnels and the stations – 24 hours a day.”

According to The Seattle Times, in a single weekday, Westlake Station has over 12,000 commuters. Other light rail lines can have up to 80,000 passengers each day, such as the Link Light Rail. It is important that these stations are kept safe for everyone.

In the United States there have been many debates over the country’s gun laws. Thousands of people are affected by guns every year including the victims, witnesses, and the family and friends of lost loved ones. According to the National Institute of Justice, “Most homicides in the United States are committed with firearms, especially handguns.” This event is another example of the countless violent incidents that result from our gun culture, but this one was very close to home.
