The newest “Pop Queen” and Billboard’s Woman of the Year, Ariana Grande, dropped her hit single “Thank U Next” on November third and it has been at the top of the charts ever since. The song is a modern day girls anthem, giving a strong and positive message to young girls through messages of lessons and self love. The song is the outcome of a particularly awful year for Ariana, the “worst year of her life” as she put it. The pop sensation deals with the terrorist attack which occurred in Manchester on her tour, the ending of her engagement to Pete Davidson, and the recent death of her long time ex boyfriend Mac Miller.

The music video for the song had very high expectations. Ariana posted teasers of the video via her Instagram weeks prior to its release, only heightening the sense of excitement. These teasers drew connections to five early 2000’s chick flick films: Mean Girls, Bring It On, Clueless, 13 Going On 30, and Legally Blonde. Julia Weller, a Arianator herself, talks about what the teasers show about the complexity of the music video. “The teaser videos showed just how much time and effort went into every scene. Every line had some sort of personal connection to Ariana as well as a ironic spinoff of what the movie lines actually are. You can tell that Ariana had a HUGE role in the creation of it.” stated Weller.

Once the video finally dropped on November thirtieth, it received one million views in the first 34 minutes, breaking a Youtube record. It currently has over 150 million views through the singers VEVO account. The video is stuffed full of recognizable actors/actresses from the films mentioned in the video as well as the cast of Victorious (her old Disney show), and her best friends. The video gives spotlight to her recent ex’s, mentioning rapper Big Sean, her backup dancer Ricky, ex fiance Pete Davidson, and Mac Miller.

Fans loved how these people were only highlighted in positive light, nothing negative. This falls perfectly in line with her next chapter in life which she characterizes as a stage of “gratitude, growth, embracing our path bumps n all.” The songs main message which Ariana states in her song as learning lessons of love, patience, and the pain from her past. Actress Jennifer Coolidge describes the essence of the song as, “such a good message for young girls that they don’t have to feel crappy about relationships that have gone wrong… I wish I could’ve heard it when I was younger.” “Thank U Next” is skyrocketing, bringing this positive message to young girls, as well as catching on just about everywhere you look.
