The Most Controversial Post-Thanksgiving Tradition Is Black Friday's Hype Worth it?
The day after Thanksgiving, well known as Black Friday, has been all around referred to as the biggest shopping day of the year. It makes sense, the holiday season is just kicking off and the big sales are highly anticipated by shoppers. Black Friday is known for huge sales, it’s unusual if a store doesn’t have some sort of deal when the day rolls around. With all the commotion, many people take part in the shopping. Popular malls create extensive lines that some have to wait hours in just to enter the shopping center. To avoid this, some people wake up extra early (some never even sleeping!) in attempt to find the best deals around with the least commotion. In bustling malls, the mass amount of people can even be dangerous, so the real question is, is Black Friday worth all the commotion?
On the downside, Business Insider reports, “Seven people died and 98 were injured in Black Friday-related accidents from 2006 to 2014. Dangers include stampedes, fights, and falling asleep while driving home from shopping due to lack of sleep.” This fact really does steer some people away from the big day. Grace Ande says, “I don’t see why Black Friday is so hyped up. I’ve found that deals are starting earlier and earlier every year because stores are attempting to draw the most customers in. Also, Cyber Monday is a great option because you can get the same deals from the comfort of your own home.”
On the other hand, if the shopper has a list of items, an agenda of stores, and is ready to hit the crowds, Black Friday has some great potential. Alex Miller, BHS senior, says “ I think Black Friday is a good option because you don’t have to go to the really busy malls. It’s always an option to go to the more laid back shopping areas and go bargain shopping there. I always seem to have a great time shopping and in the end I also save a bunch of money.”
Some of the big name brand stores with the best deals this season are Best Buy, Target, Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Dick’s Sporting Goods. The cool thing about all these places is that they all have a wide selection of what they offer, so when searching for items to fulfill your list, you won’t have to go all over town. Staying at one or two of these stores is nice because the savings usually build with the amount of items the customer buys.
Black Friday is the day for holiday shopping to begin, and it does it with the best store savings in the year. These savings cause mass amounts of people to get out early on Friday morning and hustle into stores. As noted, this can sometimes cause some dangerous effects like fighting and car crashes from sleep deprivation. But most of the time it’s a festive, fun way to get a head start on some holiday shopping and save money ,which we all love. Hope you got a good head start on your holiday shopping with some discounts!
