Bainbridge Island police are investigating the area in which they found a dead body on Tuesday, October 30. The body was located near 900 Hildebrand Lane, an area just south of Highway 305 and High School Road. Police chief Matthew Hamner revealed that there are no strong leads in the case and declined to share any further details, including the identity of the deceased or any possible suspects. “Any time this happens, it’s tough on the families, it’s tough on the loved ones,” Hamner said. “Whatever the circumstances are, it’s still a tragedy for family members. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Chief Hamner discussing with another officer.

The body was found by a civilian that was walking on a nearby trail. “We had a call from a citizen; they discovered a deceased individual,” said Hamner. There is still little available information about the state of the body. Chief Hamner said, “We can make some assumptions at this point, but we’re not going to,” Hamner said. “It’s difficult to get to where the body is. I don’t want to say that we believe something, and then find out later that it’s not accurate.” The body was found around noon, and BIPD secured the area around 12:30 PM.

The identity of the deceased will not be released until his/her next of kin is notified. Hamner added, “I feel for the deceased, and the family. And the person who discovered the deceased. And the officers; these are not the type of scenes we want to go home and tell our families [about]. But these things do happen, and as they happen, we want to make sure we are sensitive and careful,We try to make things better for those involved, and not try to make it harder. We want to be as sensitive to that as we can be.”

Police have gathered little information on the case and any civilian who has any sort of information on the case is strongly recommended to come forward. This tip can be submitted anonymously so don’t refrain from sharing important information.
