Astroworld v Queen Travis Scott & Nicki Minaj
Travis Scott dropped his long awaited album “Astroworld” on August 3, landing him a Number one spot on billboard. He proceeded to hold this title for two consecutive weeks, even through top woman rapper, Nicki Minaj, dropping her album “Queen”. Minaj’s album sold 185,000 album equivalent to Scott’s 205,000. Astroworld had been highly anticipated since the release of Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight in 2016.
Travis Scott highly promoted his album through his celebrity friends as well as his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner. He dropped his tour merch early, giving access to presale tickets with purchase. His Astroworld tour sold out without ever going on sale to the public! Scott also had many popular features on his album including Drake, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and 21 Savage. All of these artists brought a special sound to his tracks, causing sales to shoot up.
Nicki Minaj dropped her album on August 11th, only 8 days after Travis released his on the 3rd. To Minaj’s dismay, her album placed second to Scott’s. This started a social media storm voiced by Nicki including Twitter rants, and trash talk through talk show.

“I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. lol. Im actually laughing. #Queen broke the record of being number 1 in 86 countries. Thank Jesus & thank you to my fans.” one tweet from Minaj stated. She also cast blame on Spotify for stripping her of her first 12 hours of streaming.
Alex Miller, BHS senior, shares her love for both of the stars albums when stating, “I like both Travis Scott and Nicki Minaj’s sounds, especially how strong of a female presence Nicki has, but I don’t really understand her logic when she blew up on travis so publicly. Getting second on Billboard is an honor!”
A couple weeks after the feud started, it started to simmer down. Travis’s album contains hit tracks like “Sicko Mode” and “Yosemite” which are still on top. Although Minaj’s album didn’t do as well as she wanted it to, it still brought in good numbers. Both of the artists continue to bring in numbers for their albums and prove to the world they are stars here to stay.
