Over the weekend on Sunday, February 25th, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arranged a major raid in the Bay Area. As a result, 150 undocumented immigrants were arrested by ICE agents in the surrounding area, the numbers were announced in a CBS San Francisco press release. However, the department is still looking to arrest and detain many more immigrants in and around San Francisco. In a statement, ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan, who believes such immigrants in the area are quote “public safety threats”, had added that there still are 864 targeted undocumented immigrants remaining that need to be raided in Northern California. Homan also criticized Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who alerted her voters about the impending raid on Saturday. As this came to be Americans, both citizens and not yet citizens, are overall outraged. Progress, when it comes to immigration reform, has yet to be made. According to NPR, the Supreme Court recently declined to hear, and therefore, table a major case for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which protects thousands of young immigrants from deportation. However, immigrants remain under siege and unprotected, even during such urgent times. The recent Bay Area raid follows the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, which allows immigrants to be detained indefinitely without receiving any such hearings.
