The Last Eight

This years champions league has been a thrilling contest. Early exits, incredible comebacks, and new emergings stars have all been a part of this years competition. With the round of 16 coming to a close last week, here is a look forward to the quarterfinals of this legendary tournament.

In the first quarterfinal, Germany’s F.C. Bayern Munich will face last year’s champions, Spanish Giants, Real Madrid. Bayern, fresh off a massive two legs against Arsenal in the round of 16, managed to find the back of the net ten times over the two games. Los Blancos of Madrid faced Napoli in their round of 16 tie. They beat the Italians 6-2 on aggregate of two legs. This should be an incredible matchup between two of Europe’s best teams.

Next up, fire power meets fire power. Barcelona are pitted against the only remaining Italian side in the competition, Juventus. Barcelona is fresh off one of the greatest comebacks in Champions League history. Overcoming Paris Saint-Germain after being down 4-0 after the first leg. Juventus easily walked over Porto in their tie beating the portuguese side 3-0 on aggregate.

After their season of dreams, Premier League champions Leicester City will face last year’s finalists and current la Liga challenger, Atletico Madrid. The Foxes faced last years Europa League champions Sevilla, winning the tie 4-1 on aggregate. Atletico had a tougher time in qualifying for the round of 16, but still managed to overcome Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 over two legs.

Finally, injury ridden Borussia Dortmund will face surprise force Monaco. Monaco fresh off an exciting win over Pep Guardiola, Sergio Aguero, and Manchester City, beating the English side 6-6 and going through on away goals. Dortmund faced Benfica. A hat trick from striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 18 year old american Christian Pulisic, and others helped the Germans beat the Portuguese side 4-1 on aggregate.

This level of competition is always very exciting and will certainly bring lots of goals and thrills to all those who follow it. Hopefully there will be games as exciting as the match between Barcelona and PSG in the last round of play.
